The Mosque of Kankou Moussa in Gao comprises the remains of a colossal brick building, designed by an Andalusian architect. It is a place of memory of the Mali Empire, which reached its peak in the 14th century during the reign of Emperor Kankou Moussa. Gao derived its wealth from the Trans-Saharan trade.
